Veg Patch Jobs During April

VegGarden_2387209bRunner beans are greedy plants and a prepared trench will ensure a good crop. Dig a trench approx. 2ft deep by 2ft wide, loosen the soil in the bottom then fill it with kitchen peelings, grass clippings, manure (we use our guinea pig waste including newspapers), allow to rot before planting your beans next month.

Earth up seed potatoes

Remove rhubarb cloches

Prepare seed beds

Plant onion sets

Plant main-crop potatoes

Harvest spring cabbages, cauliflowers and sprouting broccoli

Sow broad beans, cabbages, carrots, lettuce, parsnips and peas

For those of you without a veg patch don’t panic as favourites such as potatoes, carrots and lettuce can be planted into tubs, beans also add height and look magnificent in the flower border!

Little and often will help keep the garden under control!
