Finish all winter pruning of fruit trees and bushes.
As long as the ground isn’t water logged or frozen you can continue to winter dig your beds ensuring that you incorporate well-rotted compost or manure.
Begin to Chit new potatoes –”Chit” are the new shoots that the potatoes produce and to “Chit” your potatoes all you need to do is put the seed potatoes into egg boxes or spread them onto a tray and store them somewhere cool and light. In a couple of weeks the eyes of the potatoes will begin to sprout and form new shoots and these are called “Chits” hence the saying “chitting potatoes”
If the ground isn’t too frozen/water logged you can sow broad beans directly into the ground and you can plant garlic, rhubarb, shallots and Jerusalem artichokes.
Should you be lucky enough to own a greenhouse then you can also sow brussel sprouts, kohl rabi, leeks, lettuce, radishes and tomatoes.
Protect cauliflower curds from frost.
Harvest – Winter cabbage and cauliflowers, leeks, kale, celeriac, swede and parsnip.
